Auto Insurance

To operate a passenger vehicle, you must have car insurance. Car insurance protects you and the people you share the road within the event of an accident. Most states require a minimum policy to operate a vehicle legally within the state. Additional types of coverage are also available.

Personal Injury Protection (PIP)

Personal injury protection insurance is the minimum amount of insurance you can carry on a vehicle to operate legally in any state. These policies, also known as general liability policies, cover the costs of medical care, lost wages, and property damage up to the limits of the policy.

PIP insurance in no-fault states will cover these losses for both the driver and the people in the other vehicle. In at-fault states, PIP insurance generally only covers the losses of the not-at-fault party. You will need to speak with an insurance agent to determine which of these apply to your insurance policy.

Comprehensive and Collision

Comprehensive and collision coverages are two coverages that are part of “full coverage.” Comprehensive insurance pays to replace or repair your vehicle if it is damaged in any event outside of an accident. This may include events such as hail or storm damage, theft or vandalism, or falling objects.

Collision coverage covers damage to your vehicle when it is involved in an accident. Regular PIP coverage only covers the cost of repairing the other person’s vehicle. Collision will cover the cost of repairing or replacing your own.

Most companies that finance vehicles require that the owner carries full coverage on their vehicle during the entire fiancé period. You can purchase full coverage for non-financed cars, but it will be more expensive for older vehicles.

Coverage For Pedestrians

Many people do not realize that their car insurance also offers them protection when they are a pedestrian. Your car insurance may cover accidents that happen when you are walking, riding a bicycle, or another non-motorized vehicle.

Motorcycle Insurance

Depending on the state you live in, it may be required to have insurance to operate a motorcycle. Some states only require motorcycle insurance if it is being financed.

Regardless of whether your state requires motorcycle insurance, it is always advisable to be insured when you operate a motorcycle. Injuries received when you are involved in a motorcycle accident can be life-changing. Make sure that you have the protection you need to cover medical bills and lost wages if you are involved in a motorcycle accident.

Boats and Recreational Vehicles

If you own a boat or any other type of recreational vehicle, there are insurance policies available. These policies cover everything from accidents to damages and repairs. The types of policies that you select for these vehicles will be based on the laws of your state and your personal needs.
